Capt. "Pat" Murphy

Capt. F.J. "Pat" Murphy was born February 16th, 1924 on the South side of Chicago, the youngest of three children. Shortly after he was born, his family moved to Brookfield Ill, where Pat spent all of his childhood years. He loved to golf, skate long distances down the frozen river in the winter, and swim in the local quarry in the summer. In 1943 during World War II, Pat enlisted in the Navy's Aviation Cadet program and was designated Naval Aviator in early 1945. He spent the next 27 years in service to his country flying Navy fighter aircraft during aviation's "Golden Age". Pat flew a total 4360 hours in 24 different Navy aircraft including 423 carrier landings on 10 different aircraft carriers including combat in Korea. Pat was CO of fighter squadrons VF-193 and VF-121. Later in his career, Pat was the executive officer of the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during the Vietnam conflict and he commanded two Navy ships, USS Navarro and USS Pickaway. One of the highlights of his career was flying the #2 jet for the US Navy Blue Angels in 1950-1952. Decorations include the Distiguished Flying Cross and Individual Air Medals for bravery in combat in Korea.

Pat married the love of his life Nell Ann (Nan) Sears in 1951 after 13 years of courtship. After retirement from the service in 1970, Pat &Nan settled in Escondido CA where they raised 7 children and remained there until his passing. His retirement passion was golf. He was a 35 year member at Escondido Country Club where he became a scratch golfer and had 4 Hole-in-Ones. He was also an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Escondido where he volunterred at the St. Vincent de Paul pantry. Pat is survived by his daughter Kathleen Bass &husband Richard, sons Michael Murphy &wife June, Fr. Patrick Murphy, Brian Murphy &wife Julie, Sean Murphy &wife Colleen, and Matthew Murphy &wife Amy and 21 grandchildren and 3 1/2 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Nan Murphy, and his son LCdr Timothy Murphy.

Vigil and Rosary will be held on Thursday night, Jan 17th at 7:30PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 537 E Street, Ramona CA 92065. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday January 18th at 10AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1160 S. Broadway, Escondido CA 92025. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to your local St. Vincent de Paul pantry or kitchen.
